The Mermaidens’ album tour for Look Me within the Eye kicked off in Christchurch on Friday.

Diving deep into the newest stream of musical consciousness from Flying Nun’s Mermaidens, it is simple to be swept away on a genre-defying ocean of dreamy pop and shark-gnawed post-punk.
Look Me Within the Eye is the third album from Wellington’s Mermaidens – Gussie Larkin, Lily West and Abe Hollingsworth. Their 10/10 album Good Physique was nominated for the 2017 Taite Music Prize.
One pal with a document retailer beneficial Look Me within the Eye by claiming it had a “going to the seaside for a swim along with your goth pals” vibe.
From album opener, Crying within the Workplace, Mermaidens ship a dynamic, clever album. It’s a siren name of fuzzy synths balanced with sunsoaked vocals which gently wash over you as you attempt to wrestle again to the floor. Present favourites fluctuate between ingesting beside the clever phrases of She’s Working, Millennia, The Reduce – “inform me your star signal” – Priorities and I May Disappear however there aren’t any dud tracks right here.
Having gained momentum in Europe after a current tour, Mermaidens’ return to New Zealand is extremely anticipated by those that recognize unique well-crafted music which swims in opposition to the mainstream tide.
